One suggestion that I found with Kodachrome when I was having problems
with the color response with my good ol' HP S-10 and S-20 scanner. I
could never get the color rendition correct via levels or curves of
individual channels without considerable work. However, I found I was
able to make a ball
I scan mostly old Kodachromes from before 1960. VS generally gives much
better shadow detail than Silverfast or Insight. I cannot begin to match
shadow detail with the other programs, so I rarely bother trying anymore.

By request, here is a re-post of how I accessed the mirror for cleaning
without dismantling the works. I did remove the top cover, which pops off
after four catches on the bottom are sprung open.
The mirror of course hinges while scanning, so I turned on the scanner power
(with the lid removed),
I finaly got Dual III, which works fine. The problem I am having is
dust on the negatives. I've tried air canister and static brush, but
this only moved dust around (cleaned some of it).
I am lookin for the recomendation for dust cleaning from the negatives.

I have tried tweaking the hue of what's there in Photoshop which sort of
works but doesn't really look like the original. Maybe I could get it better
if I persevered but I guess my first stop is to try Roger's suggestion of
adjusting the correction in Vuescan
I use a micro-porous cloth (the kind sold for cleaning lenses) most of
the time;
PEC-12 if the neg or slide really needs cleaning.
The Polaroid dust and scratch software does quite a nice job of cleanup
as well.
