There seem to be many flatbed scanners on the market that offer very high
resolution, in the 4000dpi range. The Epson Perfection 4180 is
representative. Can anyone offer an opinion as to how well they scan 35mm
slides and negs versus dedicated film scanners?
TIA,
Tom
I submit that there are actually very few cable manufacturers in the world
and those few do all the manufacturing for the many vendors that sell them.
Case in point, I bought a six foot USB cable in a dollar store for
(surprise) one dollar. A friend bought a six foot USB cable in Radio Shack
for
as a fallback while Polaroid's tech support works this one out.

Using a Polaroid SS4000 on a PC with Win 2000 Pro, Polacolor 5.0, and
Silverfast Ai 5.0, I am getting horizontal lines appearing on my scans.
There are about 12 lines evenly spaced. Interestingly, when I use
VueScan the scans are fine. Can anyone PLEASE shed some light on this?
I never noticed
I have Silverfast 5.0 which came bundled with my Polaroid Sprintscan
SS4000. I never used Silverfast but decided to try it. I installed it
on my PC which has Windows 2000 Pro and it seems to work fine except
that I can't seem to tell it which frame to scan, it defaults to only
the first frame.
Can anyone please recommend slide mounts that are good for scanning?
TIA,

Does anyone have any info on this scanner? As far as I can find out it is

it solve the DOF problem common to the 4000?

Tom,
Your tutorial is fine but I simply use a pair of scissors to cut off the top
of the mount about 1/4 inch down then peel the two halves apart to extract
the slide. Fast and simple.

I just scanned a negative and got the following information from
VueScan: 5576 x 3669 pixels 4000 dpi 1.39 x 0.917 inch 92.1 mb. The
size of the file on my hard drive is 119.885kb or about 119.9 mb. Why
the discrepancy between what VueScan says the file size is versus the
size on the hard drive?
Sorry, that should read 119,885kb or 119.9mb.

Check to make sure that the SCSI termination switch on the back of the
SS4000 is set correctly. If it's the last device in the chain the switch
should be on otherwise off.

My 2 cents on this is to agree that we have reached as high as we will with
scanner hardware. We will, however, see improvement and innovation in the
scanning software as well as post-scan software such as Genuine Fractals is
doing. And I also believe that we will see improvement and innovation in
I've got the ss4000 also.
It sounds to me that the carrier mechanism is jammed. Try removing the
cover, there are four tabs on the bottom, and see if anything is clogging
the mechanism. Could be part of the slide or film carrier (check them
carefully for missing pieces) or part of a negative or

Can anyone suggest a good way to clean slides and negs prior to scanning? I
clean the best I can with a soft brush and light puffs of air but still wind
up with dust on my scans. I verified that the dust is not in my scanner.
I'd like to get as much off the originals as possible as I don't like

You're correct, of course, and my SCSI card is device 7 (the maximum) thus
auto termination is working. My CD burner (internal) is device 2, my
external JAZ and ZIP drives are 4 and 5 repectively, my SS4000 is 6 and my
flatbed scanner (last physical device on the chain) is 3 so all is well (at
The SS4000 did originally come with a SCSI card but Polaroid stopped
including it at some point. I got one of the last ones and it didn't have
the card and their installation instructions were modified to reflect that
change.

I like the Adaptec SCSI cards and I suggest that your friend get one that
can service both internal and external devices. The cards that usually come
with scanners or other SCSI devices are usually bare bones cards that only
have either internal or external connecters and are thus limited. My
