Nowadays when you hear of "murguistas", it generally refers to the
modern ones like those popular in Uruguay at Carneval. In that
context, the label seems to suggest a certain sort of artistic
expression which borders on political, or at least social commentary.

as mr. stiller pointed out, murguistas are street musicians.
but not every street musicians. murguistas are tipically from uruguay and
also from buenos aires, argentina, hence its urban roots. you may find some
others in places 500 miles
As Andrew pointed "murguista" is a member of a carnival group called "murga"
that sings ironical songs changing the lyrics of well known music. The
proposal is to criticize the government or anything they consider it
