Yes, I've tried it myself. Here are my steps (Finale Mac 2003a): - Create a new document without libraries: you get one measure, treble clef. - Add a few measures. - Create a staff style where the only option checked is "First Clef", set to alto clef. - Apply the staff style to the first measure.

I'm not sure I understand what you're doing here. Do you mean this: 1. create a staff style where "First Clef" is set to alto. 2 apply the style. ? When you apply the style to the first measure, the clef should change to alto. If it doesn't, maybe the staff has another clef chosen in "Set to Cl
