I ultimately figured out that the file has no extension. The Mac OS Finder
is very confusing because Hide Extension was checked but also grayed out.

Thank you, Christopher, that was extremely helpful. I agree that 8.5mm seems
too big but then I'm a trumpet player and have never had a bowing arm get in
the way of my view. The guidelines suggest different sizes for strings and
winds.

It has been awhile since I looked at the MOLA guidelines and I have to say
they are much improved since the last time I read them c. 10 years ago.
Some math errors have been fixed, and they are much less prescriptive.
(Even the best editions of Beethoven Symphonies did not meet the MOLA
guidelines
