I want to assign a red color for coda and segno signs but at the same time keep
all other toll-specific symbols black. Is there a solution other than placing a
graphic into the score? Thanks.

If the music is used under colored lights, the red will disappear. For that
reason I've found that it's best to keep everything black.

Yes you can do this.
In the view menu choose "select display colors". Change everything to black
except repeats - make that red.
When you print, check the "Display Colors" box

Thanks, but that's not what I want. If I do that, the repeats, 1st/2nd endings
and all text created with the repeat toll will be red also. I want just the
coda and segno signs red. And I don't want to place a graphic into the score.

I've been doing it by hand, using a marker. But it happens that I just bought a
laser color printer, and I want it to do it for me :-) I figured the easiest

Go back to your measure attached text block idea then and put in hidden repeats
that cover your playback needs.

In the Color Preferences window, Expressions are set to BLUE, Layer 4 to RED.
"Layer Colors Apply to All Items" checked. However, all expressions placed in
Layer 4 show in BLUE, the same color set globally for "Expressions".

Great! That is what was missing. Thanks. Now, I don't understand this: If
"Layer Colors Apply to All Items" is checked, if Layer 1 is black, 2 and 4 red
and 3 green, and I was placing the expressions in Layer 1, how come they were
showing in blue? Shouldn't they be black? Doesn't "Layer Colors A

I know this isn't what you are asking for (i.e. not a solution internal
to Finale), but it is really quick and easy to generate all your parts
as PDF, using the PDF Creator free software. That is a good thing to do
without respect to the desire for colors.
But once your parts are in PDFs, you
