1) When engraving a score that doesn't use barlines, what's the best
way to ensure that the invisible barlines don't affect spacing (other
than making each score system a single measure)?
They will still affect the spacing somewhat because of the defaults you
can change

Actually, I did eventually come to the conclusion that making each
system a single measure would save me a lot of hassle in the long
run. But I forgot about the split/merge plugins -- thanks for the
reminder.

no! make each smallest unit a separate unit, you will have much more

The other thing is that the composer wants all the notes beamed, and
Robert's beam over barlines works better when there are fewer
barlines.
ah, yes, aha it's one of those. then yes definitely ignore my
suggestion and go for 1 measure/system.
