Hi,
I just got octave to run with fink. Somehow it wasn't as easy as fink was
"advertised" to be. Anyways... after I had all the dependencies resolved
(without installing X) I ended up missing two libs: libdl.dylib and
libssl.dylib. The first I installed from a package at macosx.forked.net.

Actually, you're not
Hi,
I know that the newest version of gnuplot is 3.8 (unstable) that comes
with AquaTerm.
How can I install this version from fink?
I already installed gnuplot 3.7 that is the last stable version.
Thanks in advance.

Start xinvaders3d by typing xinv3d in an xterm.
Which gnome applications do you want to add which aren't already
in fink?
You must be root to play with /sw/src, you can't do it from the
finder. Well, you could if you changed the permissions or owner.
Find out more about permissions:
man chown
The situation with gnuplot (as with many other apps nowadays) is that
they come in several flavours...
There are two gnuplot variants around, but (at present) only the one
supplied by fink can be used by octave.
This has to do with heritage:
Gnuplot for Mac OS 7/8/9 ---> [carbonized] ---> gnup
I've managed to get Xdarwin and Fink running Gnome on my desktop. I'm really
excited at the prospect of all the great programs for Unix that are
available! I've downloaded some programs from Fink, (xinvaders3d for
example), but I don't know how to use them or get them to show up.

You can also get a version through fink that uses the Cocoa wrapper
(3.8h.0-4), but it's rated as unstable.
The main problem here is that fink really expects everything to be installed
by it, unless there is 'system-' package for it (like tetex, xfree86), so
that even if you could force the insta
Mike:
Gnuplot is actually present in fink, though it is not listed by dselect.
You can install it with `fink install gnuplot'. There is an OS X version
of gnuplot that does not use X-windows but rather has an OS X (Cocoa)
wrapper. I found this difficult to use; for example, it uses "\r" rathe
I am trying to install octave (binary) via fink. Fink tells me that
octave depends on gnuplot but that a package installing gnuplot
cannot be found. How do I get fink to install octave anyway? There
is a non X version of gnuplot that I already have, so I don't care
about the dependency.

One thing to keep in mind is that some window managers, such as WindowMaker,
have functions that require you to click on the desktop--this doesn't work
if you are running in rootless display mode.

Hi Andreas,
as it happens, I recently put my personal step-by-step instructions on
the web for a colleague of mine. Maybe you'll find this useful - but I
cannot guarantee anything... it's really just the basics...
Take a look at

Hi everybody,
I hope it is appropriate to post this on the list -- I
apologize if it is not... I'm really new to Fink and
Unix and just making my first steps. The amount of
documentation to read can be quite overwhelming...
Yesterday I compiled and installed XFree86 4.2.0 from
source using fink
First try 'startx -- -quartz'
If that doesn't work, try typing 'which X'. It should return
/usr/X11R6/bin/X .
If not, then do 'ls -l /usr/X11R6/bin/X*' which should give you something
like
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 14 Feb 14 15:03 /usr/X11R6/bin/X ->
XDarwinStartup
-rwxr-xr-x 1
