I ran the xcode uninstall perl script and re-installed from a download
from apple's site and things work spiffy now. Thanks.

Hard to guess with the little information you are providing.
Perhaps you just activated unstable and, instead of running "fink
selfupdate", you immediately ran those apt-get commands?
Try "fink scanpackages" and then "sudo apt-get update". Better,
