p.s. I started up xemacs with activity monitor open. After about 1 sec of
activity, the activity monitor settled down to the same mostly idle state as
before starting up. So it appears that xemacs is in a wait state, waiting for
something (what?) to happen.

Thanks again,
I had already renamed .emacs to .emacs-old (and nothing much of interest there
anyway), and there is no .xemacs directory. I will try removing the sumo...

Thank you for your response; I am running tcsh so the relevant files would be
.xinitrc and .tcshrc. Anyway I just checked and am not setting a DISPLAY
environment variable anywhere.

I encourage you to try again after installing the lastest X11 from here:

I'm not an expert on fink, but A couple of xemacs possibilities occur to me...
[0] Open `Activity Monitor.app` and set "update frequency" to *very*
often. During the wait period is xemacs consuming a lot of CPU? or is
it idle?
[1] Is there anything in your ~/.xemacs/ dir?
* try renaming this

some great wisdom??
I posted a question a few days ago, got no responses, but now have some more
data, and so hoping again someone will read and respond.
I have installed xemacs from both macports and from fink (the lat

Thank you, I followed the instruction and now I have an xemacs. But it is
excruciatingly slow to start up an xwindow; several minutes. (starting up in
-nw mode inside a terminal is fine). I had the same experience installing a

I've just reinstalled fink after a long absence, on my new Macbook
Pro, and then installed xemacs-sumo-pkg. I got no error message
during installation, but also I cannot find xemacs in /sw/bin or /sw/
sbin. I tried reinstall for good measure; same result. There is
