I use DSL and have successfully installed and used fink packages for
several months and for a month on 10.2 until this started a few days
ago. I cannot identify anything in particular that could have corrupted
my installation which is why I am asking the group.

Just a question: is there particular reason you are installing Mozilla
with fink? Mozilla 1.2 is out for OS X in binary as a package and, for
once, seems pretty stable (unlike Chimera by the way). I have been
using it for several days now and I am more pleased than I thought I
would be.

Have you heard of Carbon Copy Cloner? It uses ditto to create bootable
clones of OSX volumes. Now in your case you don't want the OSX system
since the TiBook is certainly different than the G3 in video drivers at
minimum and probably much more. but you might be able use ditto to
clone /usr
