I am trying to update fink (update-all) and it starts off fine, then
starts to run into some trouble.
This is that last line that is displays before things just stop.

You forgot the space ;-). Try this
ls -ld /tmp
l
Oopshere's what I get when I do it CORRECTLY:

BTW, when I recreated the private directory in tmp, I was able to do
