I discovered that the gmp developers have been incorrectly building
non-PIC code into their shared libraries. They have been using -fast
which sets -mdynamic-no-pic without adding an explicit -fPIC. I recall
some discussion on the debian mailing lists of checking for non-PIC code
in linux
