Coming back after 10 days off-line (there is still some nice snow in the
Alps :-)), I was curious about what Fink had been doing and immediately
did a selfupdate and update-all. I was impressed that everything,
including new versions of fink and such heavyweights as qt, mozilla and
gimp, compiled
I have also used for some time. I use the same way as you, but with
oregano or xcircuit as frontend. No problems so far, very stable and
good.
Using it with oregano as front end i experience none of this problems.

Which version of XFree86 do you have installed? You might need to upgrade
to xfree86-4.2 before this will compile properly...

Okay, I have moved it to stable...
fink info spice
would have given you my e-mail address, use the fink info
command to find e-mail addresses of maintainers.
I thought everyone used oregano as a front end for spice, rather
than using it directly...
