I get the following when trying to install gnome:
xfree86-shlibs conflicts with system-xfree86
system-xfree86 (version 4.2-6) is installed.
So, is it not possible to install gnome with XFree86 installed manually?

Make sure that your ncurses, ncurses-shlibs, and ncurses-dev packages are
all the same version. If so, then try rebuilding one of the packages that
gives you a problem (e.g. lynx).

Okay after completely removing /usr/X11R6/lib and reinstalling Apple's
X11, qt now compiles fine. Thanks to everyone who responded.
