/usr/bin/gcc3 is really GCC 3.1, which I had not installed with XCode
1.1; just installed GCC 3.3 thinking that would be sufficent.
Fortunately, I had the 1.1 images on the HD, so installing the missing
piece was no problem.

That's strange. Here's what I have on my machine:

gcc3 is found under /usr/bin and is installed by the DeveloperTools
package from Xcode CD. Probably your another victim of the lazy
installer provided by Apple. Remove
/Library/Receipts/DeveloperTools.pkg and reinstall the DeveloperTools
from the Xcode CD.
