I checked with maxima upstream about the issue noted in
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.os.macosx.fink.user/27974, and got back
the following. So for our purposes, it looks like users will have to
work around it for now, until a new release comes out
Just an FYI, the latest version of maxima at their sourceforge site is
5.17.1, perhaps it fixes this error.

Unfortunately, no; but it's apparently fixed in their current CVS
version. I've gone ahead and updated to 5.17.1 in current/unstable

I just downloaded the latest fink for 10.4
