What system do you have installed? 4.4.0-1 is very old. In particular
the Provides field has changed in more recent versions.

problem reported earlier of not having a pdflatex command (although
pdftex -progname pdflatex does work, modulo other problems).

That didn't work, but fink purge pdftex did.
followed by fink reinstall
