As I'm migrating to Debian 6.0 I have two choices: Firebird 2.1 and
Firebird 2.5
As it is a production system, I have to migrate as smoothly as

chars like äöü within triggers while the database and/or connection was
configured to charset NONE

I think You have to install Firebird in a different folder for each instance,
with its own Firebird.conf
