You bet I have that problem. It is gnat time and I never trim any hair
out of the ears, but those little devils work their way in anyway. I
smear Swat on the earhair of just spray the hair if she lets me. that

It sounds like your horses may have Aural Plaque. I will tell you
what I have learned about the condition from personal experience. If
the ear has flat flakey/crusty/waxy looking whitish (or gray) areas
mixed in the pink skin
