So, just right click on the variable in your code (Not the variables panel) and
select Watch "The Variable Name". It's about 2/3rds down just above "Run As".

Let me try to clarify. The expressions panel cannot evaluate e4x expressions

Valdor, I seem to be able to look at basic variables when I trace now - I'm
right-clicking the variable from the Variables panel, adding it as an
Exp
The second part doesn't work...
I just get an error... I will take some screen shots of what I'm doing and
will also try non-XML objects to see if my problem is just with XML objects.
