Hello Jerry, I think ALC is greatly overrated. Wasn't it originally conceived as a method to reduce splatter by preventing overdrive to an amplifier? Even at that, it has problems because there is a delay between the time the alc circuit detects overdrive and the time the transceiver reduce

Although the Alpha amps have an output for ALC the manual states that it is not recommended that it be used! It provides limited protection to overdrive and was often set up improperly. All in all, it does little good and can do a lot more "bad" when not adjusted properly. A number of Alpha amps
