This is TERRIFIC information. Given the low cost of desktops these days, I
could have saved myself the pain by just getting one instead of trying to
make this laptop work properly.

That's interesting Dudley. I bought a Belkin SOHO
F1DS104J four-way K V M last year and I haven't
noticed problems.
The only thing I do is make sure that when I'm booting
a PC, that it is selected. If I don't, sometimes the
video resolution or aspect will be different from power
down.
