I can share some experience.
I'm using Mero Mobile's GPRS with old Nokia 5500 phone along with
laptop and ubuntu.
There are no difficulties - just add your phone into /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf
and put following lines into /etc/chatscripts/ppp0:
OK AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mero"
OK ATDT*99***

That's good story, but unfortunately desktop systems are obsolete. And
creating really good, I must admit, theme for Gnome is not enough to
fight windows, which already dies anyway, because of mobile devices
and drift to the low-power and ARM's CPUs in laptop segment. =)
