This topic has been addressed several times the last few months. It can be done and fully on the template level through postscript textboxes on master pages, and it can be further automated by incorporating the use of Apply Master Pages so that content you want on A3 pages will always stay on A3

I have an 86-chapter book with the same variables in every chapter. I want to convert all instances of all user variables to text. I can delete the variable in one chapter and thus convert all instances in that chapter, but importing variable definitions across the whole book doesn't delete any

Yes! I highly endorse BookVars ... thanks for providing it, Scott. To John and others: I will make the following prediction. If you use a lot of variables (whether in FM books that contain multiple files or not), you will end up buying it (i.e., not give it up after 30 days) once you try it!
