I seem to vaguely remember that this setting is only valid for CMYK documents.

Hello Framers,
I just received a batch of 200+ FrameMaker 4, 5.5, and 6 files that I need
to get into Frame 10 and then convert into Word and PDF. However, when I
try to open them in either Frame 7 or Frame 10, I get the following error

Sorry my answer on the forums didn't help you ;)
Maybe the file is in FM view-only mode - try Esc, Shift+f, l, k to toggle it

Hi Mike -
I tried that but then it's invisible onscreen as well as in print.
I'm trying to simplify the processes here so I'd hate to add changing views or
dealing with more conditions to the already-confused/overburdened staff.
Thanks.

Thanks, Harro.
Unlocking the read-only FrameMaker file did the trick. Curious that in 15
years of using Frame, I hadn't encountered a locked Frame file. Now that I
know about it, I see this question has been answered a few times before.

IIRC, WinNT locked files upon writing them to CD, which may be why you found that the files were locked on such "vintage" Fm files.

Usually, files brought in (copied) from a CD are set to read-only by Windows
(including recent versions - not just WinNT). This is because they *are*
read-only when on the CD. :)
If the folder is also set read-only (e.g., this *may* occur if you copied a
tree from the CD), then you may also
