Here's what I've done with all the pods.
Open the pod.
Drag it away from its current location so it becomes a free-floating pod.
Resize it.
Drag it into my dock.
Now when I access it, it opens from the dock at the size I set.
After I did this with all the pods, I saved my workspace so they
Hi Craig -
I guess I haven't been clear about the process I'm trying to automate.
It's not a case of replacing text with variables.
We have books that have many, many variables in them. Each time the book is
updated, the variables must be redefined. We get the new definitions as a plain
text
I think this plug-in does what you
want:

Ah! In that case, you absolutely need the BookVars plugin from Leximation.
Given what I now understand as your need, this will do exactly what you want.
BookVars is my most-oft-used plugin in FrameMaker! I maintain all my variables
text in external text files using this - it works at the book
Thanks for pointing me to bookvars.
Now a new question: I thought there was a way to insert a space that's the
width of punctuation, such as a period or comma (similar to Esc spacebar m for
em space, Esc spacebar t for thin space, etc.). I found the Unicode for it is
x2008. I've tried (and
Number space: Esc+space+1
Em space: Esc+space+m
En space: Esc+space+n
Thin space: Esc+space+t
You probably want thin space.

And if I'd read more closely, I'd have seen you knew how to do thin space.
I believe those are the only special spaces available, though, so if thin
space isn't what you want, you might try numeric. I don't recall ever
seeing one that was the width of punctuation, and I doubt if there is
one,
Hi Lin -
I found a lot of information on line and in Unicode, the punctuation space
(Unicode 2008) is the same size as a comma or period so it's very useful in
lining up columns of numbers. A numeric space is too large and a thin space is
too small.
Maybe FrameMaker's support for Unicode
BTW, the character can be created in a variable as \u2008. I just can't figure
out any way to create it outside of a variable.

Hi Pat,
I don't think there's a keyboard shortcut that will do that, or at least
none I've ever found, and I've been creating a quick reference for myself
lately on all the keyboard shortcuts I want to use, so I've looked at this
a bit.
I think the only way to insert a Unicode character like
First, if you haven't already, you need to turn on the unicode keypad.
It's turned off in Windows by default. Use regedit to find the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method. Right-click on it,
choose New and then String to create a new string called
EnableHexNumpad with a value of 1.
Thanks, Mike. I didn't see anything about this online. You've been very helpful.

Thanks to all who responded.
Attaching the variables pod to the dock seems to make the pod behave
(within the dock). In my case, this means that FM is difficult to use
without a second monitor which again affects some FM shortcuts.
So I think Adobe should look at this as a minor bug.
Brgds,
Yeah, really. I had no idea there even WAS a Unicode keypad. Very useful
knowledge that I intend to pass on to my coworkers. :)
