Following up to myself...
I brought my laptop up to date:
FreeBSD 4.6-RC #1: Mon Jun 3 21:48:05 PDT 2002 i386
pcm0: on csa0
No problems. Sound is just fine. The problem seems to be limited to the
cmi driver.

Sound is scratchy... sounds kinda like when you've got a loose
speaker cable. I swapped the snd_pcm and snd_cmi KLDs for ones built from
4-STABLE on March 9th, and the prob
Rohit,
"mount -a" will mount your filesystems read-write. Or just "mount /" to
remount the / filesystem read-write, if you prefer. In the future, please

When you ran 'make install' after building your kernel, it renamed your
old kernel to kernel.old. When the bootloader countdown starts, press
the spacebar (or any key except ENTER) and you will get the bootloader
prompt. Type "unload" and then "boot /kernel.old". In the future, plese

What do you mean by "reverse-engineering"? I wrote a userland USB HID
driver using libusb for an experimental RTS game engine
I've looked in the archives, and this seems to have been a FAQ in the past
with the answer being "they don't work yet". I haven't found anything on
the subject since February, so I'm inquiring:
Do PCI PCMCIA adapters work in 4.3?
As far as I can tell, they do not. My Lucent ORiNOCO/WaveLAN car
Under -current built from Oct 22 soucrces, and cdd built today, ripping
CD-AUDIO tracks just produces output files which are just a loud hiss.
I've tried this with both of my CD-ROM drives to no avail, and it used to
work for both of them under -current several months ago.
