I pulled the 'nameserver' addresses from /etc/resolv.conf.
That seems to fix it. Thanks!

Recompiling the kernel using the instructions here:
http://www.mostgraveconcern.com/freebsd/kern.html
specifically: make kernel KERNCONF=YOURKERNEL
yielded a compile error.

with IPFIREWALL and IPDIVERT, so I'll check back
once that's done and test
