This happens on at least 6.3, I believe it is also the case in later
versions but am unsure (7-RELEASE and later kill my
# gpg --verify freebsd-update-upgrade.tgz.asc

You can't use freebsd-update on a modified kernel.
Ports can be left unchanged unless you change the major version and go
to 7.
