Radtest Returns Nothing, radius.log is empty

my apologies, I searched hard but could not find an answer, and think it might be simple. I'm running freeradius 1.0.1 running, created user "testy" with pass "tester" in /etc/raddb/users, also  using default radiusd.conf and clients files logged in as root, ran /usr/sbin/radiusd -X then..
