Can you add these two lines to your bash_profile:
alias python="python3"
alias pip="pip3"
Then either open a new terminal or source your bash_profile before testing that
a call to python is pointing to your python3 installat

Doing an "upgrade" is fine, but I don't think you want to do a
"dist-upgrade". Telling the system to upgrade to the distribution
likely installed something causing the conflict(s) when you tried to install
