Have you tried setting the xmame parameters in the local_conf.py? Check
xmame.SDL --help

I'm running into the same problem on two different boxes.
If I start freevo it crashes with
./freevo: line151: number looks like pid Illegal instruction ./runapp python -OO
src/main.py $@
The log internal-runapp-0.log states:

1.4 box w/o any problems. Did you emerge freevo, or build it on your own? I
am new to Gentoo, this is my 1st Gentoo install, but are you running with
some very optimized flags in your make.conf? If so, maybe you have

Just one other question. If I am installing freevo
using the tgz file do I need to use the setup.py file?
Freevo works just fine without running this file.
So what is the purpose of setup.py?

It seems, that I've downloaded the old rsync-freevo which downloads the
1.3.4.ebuild.
But I don't really thing that's the problem.
I've just emerged the 1.4rc1.ebuild but still having a non-starting freevo but
this time I don't even get any error message
