Probably not what you want to hear, but I just installed freevo on a Gentoo 1.4 box w/o any problems. Did you emerge freevo, or build it on your own? I am new to Gentoo, this is my 1st Gentoo install, but are you running with some very optimized flags in your make.conf? If so, maybe you have

T.C. Many thanks for the suggestions. Just one other question. If I am installing freevo using the tgz file do I need to use the setup.py file? Freevo works just fine without running this file. So what is the purpose of setup.py? I understand you can use it for building and installing

It seems, that I've downloaded the old rsync-freevo which downloads the 1.3.4.ebuild. But I don't really thing that's the problem. I've just emerged the 1.4rc1.ebuild but still having a non-starting freevo but this time I don't even get any error message The output looks as follows:
