I am having an identical problem:
Celeron 500
256M RAM (or something like that, I forget exactly)
als4000 alsa driver
some investigation shows that mplayer is segfaulting when loading the mp3s.
I tried both with the runtime mplayer, and one I created myself.
However, the one I created myself had
