Maybe the workaround creating symlinks is helpfull for you, too.

ln -s $i /anotherdir/a/$i
im sure there is a way to improve this (so you dont have to do with with
every letter)...but im not firm about shell-scripting, sorry.
or maybe even better for you:
You can page down in Freevo, thats what I do. Also If you are using a
remote you can set it to repeat so you only have to hold the button down.

as afaik Freevo can't group anything at all, nor can I page though a
