I'm considering upgrading the drive in my Pismo. At the 40GB size,
there are two IBM models that are attractive, both having the
quiet/fluid bearings. The main differences seem to be that the
cheaper model runs at 4200 RPM, with 2 MB cache. The pricier version
runs at 5400 RPM,
Well, as a last resort, you could try to yank all the files and folders from
your Preferences folder. Don't delete them! Put them away, but keep them
around. Make sure that you quit all running applications but the Finder.
That would tell you if some preferences is corrupted.

I have a Pismo 400 and my wife has an iBook 500. I get iBook envy
because of the small size and because of the ports on the side. Lugging
a big Pismo around is really a pain and I hate reaching around to plug
things in. Battery life is also a big issue for me. My Pismo battery is
worthless,
