Pismo battery woes?

I'd been given a Pismo (yes, givem, the last of the truly gorgeous laptops Apple ever made) but it wasn't going ... it *had* been functioning, but was then stored (with a full charge) in the bottom of a filing cabinet for two months before I got my lucky li' mitts on this G3/500/768MB/20GB

If I pull it out and reinsert it it seems to charge a few % it goes up about 3% and then the battery icon changes from a lightning bolt to a plug, also when I push the button on the battery pack all the lights blink rapidly. It is up to 21% now should I keep trying to charge it this way. Thank,
