how many of us could cope with high resolution on small screens as
we advance in age? I keep looking at a new 12" powerbook, but keep
fretting about whether my eyesight would cope with font sizes

How about using the built in zoom function of OS X?
Doesn't work during the installs, after the monitor was forced to the
higher res.
