Thanks for the info - I've heard a lot about static charges, but I'm not
sure that applies in my case. I've restarted a few times, but problem is
unchanged. My local mac dealer has suggested doing 'Software Restore', so
I'll do that, though I suspect some damage to the speakers ...

The sound on my G4 powerbook has gone (running 10.2.4). Nothing (except if
I plug in the earphones, I get loud intermittent sounds in the right
channel as I work. Insert a cd and I-Tunes won't play it.
If I go to System Preferences and open the Sound panel, I find all the
