I tried switching in the 9.2.2 ATi extensions...still the same 4:3 resolutions. While I was Googling, I found a couple of recent threads on the macos9lives forum discussing the same issue with Rage 128/Radeon cards in G3s running 8.6. They hadn't found a solution either despite trying all

The resolution is normally a function of the hardware hardware drivers. Since your unspecified video card supports 1600x900 in 10.4.11 9.2.2, it means the hardware does support the desired resolution, but that OS 8.6 is lacking the required software driver. You could try substituting the
