Matt,
when a give the script a GZIP -1 the script runs a little better but the
transfer rate stops at 100Kbs... or less...it would take more time to create
a local image then to upload it to server... can't understand....

write this file in the fat
partition the transfer rate stands around 1MBs, this is the script:
$ mkdir /mnt/fat
$ mount /dev/wd0f
$ savepart wd0 e /mnt/fat/image
I guess it's it.
