Godwars2 has easily the most advanced combat system in a mud to date. You control every single action your character performs. New moon's combat system is very descriptive, sometimes to the point of complete unrealism. I agree though, Materia Magica has pretty slow fights, when you're a newbie a

I haven't noticed any of that. And ranger is part mage, actually. They get spells like armor, magic dart, spark, etc. They do start with a bag of components though, but I assume that's mostly for brewing potions and doing things with herbalism. -
