Same here, send_metadata_interval has been set to 0 thoughout, it's the default
setting. I've tried other versions of centos (5.5, 5.6, and 5.7) as well.

Thanks for taking the time to help Vladimir! The only working line in my
gmetad.conf is:
data_source compute localhost:8649 f1:8649
everything else is default and commented out.
I took your suggestion and am now using a single channel, 8649, but the
behavior is the same. So then just in case
I've been able to partially trackdown why my
nodes are only reported as up for ~6 minutes before going
down on the web interface- it looks like gmond stops receiving
multicast and unicast messages. Restarting gmond on the “gatherer node”
re-establishes listening for about 6 minutes, then gmond
