Having updated gentoo frequently how can I know what version of gentoo I'm
using (2004.4 or 2005.1?)

yesterday I issued an emerge --rsync, fixpackages, then
emerge -ubD world
Issuing now ls -l /etc/make.profile I get
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 48 4 gen 18:46 /etc/make.profile
- ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004.3
How come I'm still stuck to 2004.3 and not to 2005.1?

Why doesn't it seem to recognize the Synaptics touchpad whilst at boot time it
does?
Are the options device of the kind /dev/misc/psaux, /dev/misc/mice, etc in
my xorg.conf (see below) correct?
And the InputDevice(s)?

No suggestions for a real minimal xorg.conf to reach the result?

pieces of software are available to:
1) Record the cassettes on files using a tape recorder connected to the mic
port of the sound card (or there's some other way to do it?)
2) Translate those files into wav files to be burned with xcdroast.

Don't use dev=ATAPI
It would be to no avail, I'm sure!
As a matter of fact I erased everything on the partition by reformatting it,
made a new installation of Gentoo from scratch compiling only the new kernel
2.6.10 and xcdroast. Previously on the same partition I had kernel 2.4.

Right, I didn't compile the 8250/16550 PCMCIA device support as a module.
I've changed this in the kernel .config and recompiled everything.
Now it's all ok!

Thanks to you I found the solution. My hard-disk has soffered some kind of a
stroke and destroyed the /dev/ttyS* (and many others) files!
I'll copy them from another very similar installation.

I do not have anything of the kind but I can modprobe it!
I think I'll have to call these modules into /etc/modules.d/kernel-2.6 to have
the started at boot time.
Am I right?
