I know this isn't exactly Gimp stuff - but I am trying to access my new
USB scanner through the Gimp:
File - Acquire - Xsane: Device dialog
and I figured that lots of you guys must have already set up a USB scanner

I am running Libranet 2.7 kernel 2.4.19 (a Debian variant) and trying to

a couple of thoughts:
1) if you want to save a layer separately, the easiest way i know of to do
that is to click on the layer in the layers, channels, and paths dialoge,
drag it to the toolbar, and it will create a new image with just that layer.
then save it to whatever you need
