historically, the application would only prevent closing the "last" open
window, regardless of what's in it. So yes, you could "lose" your open
CoA by opening a register (or report) in another window and then closing
the first window. This was, for some reason, considered a feature.

I can indeed reopen the Accounts tab through the View menu, but it opens
with only the five root-level accounts. I have to clic

open reports or registers in separate windows. (*not* using separate
windows will avoid this issue)

But you can certainly bring it back up via the View menu as you have
discovered.

Do you not have the Accounts tab? If you do, open any account and enter
transactions.
As an alternative, you might use Tools,,>General Journal to open the
journal and enter transactions.
If those things are not present, you might try closing the report -- not
GnuCash, just the report.
