This is recommended, especially for those tiring of labyrinthine discussions
about film festivals, garbage, phantom airports and language scripts.
Teotonio de Souza has reviewed in the Economic and Political Weekly (01 October
2005) 'Goa: A Daughter's Story' (Maria Aurora Couto). de Souza has
We're already seeing the first water shortages of the busy season in the
Porvorim area. Municipal water has not flowed for three days and if there isn't
any today we're going to see water tankers back on the roads.
Contrast this with the fact that the national Met Dept has just issued its
The humour quotient of this list has recently been provided a terrific boost by
the considerate poster who sent out the text of an article apparently published
by the Navhind Times and written by Nandkumar Kamat, about tarballs, beaches
and conspiracies.
I advise list subscribers not to miss
Is there a reason for sending out on this list the tiresome quasi-fiction about
Goa, masquerading as news, from the Hindu group of publications? Or was that
meant to be entertainment?
Thanks,

A Thank You to the Goanet team for continuing to bring out the news digest and

Despite an atrocious electricity situation, floods, and the several everyday

This form of public transport seems to me to be unique to Goa - I haven't
encountered it anywhere else in India or abroad. Do list members know more
about 1) how such transport was formally organised in Goa and when, and 2) why
the riders are called 'pilots'? Best, Rahul
I'd like to point out, in the otherwise interesting comment on Konknni and the
Roman script, that Roman is not used by Chinese and Japanese users to
communicate via email. The Japanese can scarcely be expected to use anything
other than 'kanji', nor the Chinese any alternate to Mandarin.
To return to the thread about Humperdinck and the Indian claim (no, indeed,
'aapro' Zubin would not qualify as being a Goenkar, not even if he owned a
sumptuous mansion in Arpora). Two names from the talkies are what came to mind

Living and working in Goa and electricity
How does the absence of reliable electricity affect your work and life? Can an
estimate be made of the economic cost to individual and community because of
the dreadful state of electricity generation and distribution in Goa? Can a
case be made
Reis Magos (opp Inox) is how one post describes this rather splendid albeit
neglected monument in a post about Goa's forts.
I am more distressed than amused by this description. The Inox may have become
a very recent (somewhat garish) urban landmark, but the effective range of a

This is ref the post by Cecil Pinto about the bound newspapers. If 40-year-old
newspapers are in danger of disintegration (even allowing for their relatively
more frequent handling than, say, material that is 100 or 150 years old) then
the condition of the older material in the Central Library
This is an excellent proposal. The stock of images that are held by the
public in Goa (and about Goa) must be enormous and tremendously valuable as
a social, historical and cultural resource. I'd like to add to Cecil's note
to suggest the inclusion of one category that is at least as important

Dear Rico,
Thanks for a very useful value-for-money eating-out list. Some of
those names are new to me, but I find some need amplification and
