One of my site's is suddenly giving a 404 on the default version as
well as the other older versions.
Is anyone aware of any system issues?

Ditto what Greg and Thomas said. This is really the only option for
outbound mail sending with GAE.
Short of a change in the rules, I'll have to look elsewhere for the mail
services (i.e. I'll have to give my money to someone else). This really
complicates new domain setup.
