If you are intending to use GIS for visualization and data conversion,
maybe better to use something easy to start off, like QGIS:
http://www.qgis.org/wiki/Download#Release_2
You have GRASS plugin there if needed. But usually you should be able to
do export the files to other OGR/GDAL supported fo

I am a new user, just discovered grass and OSGeo. My current interest is
accessing the files from NaturalEarthData, converting them into matlab

I use Linux and Unix. Octave 3.4.0, Gnuplot, Grass 6.4.0. This
workstation has Ubuntu 10.04.

Please consider the manual:

Thanks Hamish,
What I meant was: Is each LOCATION typically a different project?(one

LOCATIONS do not ever cross or mix with each other? And I guess on the
URL you gave me on the wiki site, that is a yes.

The PERMANENT mapset is created automatically for each new LOCATION.
However, you cannot create a (new) LOCATION *under* the PERMANENT
mapset.

I'm using 6.3 on Ubuntu with QGIS.
If I create a new location, under PERMANENT, does that coordinate system

want to use and they are all different coord sy
Yes the GRASS book is very good.
I got mine from www.booktopia.com.au took a couple of weeks to get it, even
then it was bound upside down and back to front. Still a very good book.

It is also useful to know that if you work somewhere with access to
Springer academic journals (e.g. a university), you can download the
GRASS book under their subscription:

I've just downloaded my copy of GRASS (last night) and found this link:

very helpful. Yes, the GRASS-Bible is great, too. I've been reading this
list while waiting for my copy. I hope you can find it in Oz-land.

If you can get hold of the GRASS bible by Markus and Helena:
http://www.grassbook.org/
You're on your way to become a great grass user.

Hi Group,
I've been plugging away with grass for a few months now and not making
progress as fast as I would like. Is there a user group (preferably in
Melbourne though Adelaide is doable) or someone who would be able to sit
down with me for an hour or two to help me through a few startup problems.
Okay. some details.
I am working in California maps. I had trouble creating a new
project/mapset, but it is working now. I used r.in.gdal to bring in the
Geotiff and Grass sees it as NAD83 Albers Conical. I tried to use the

You must create two location: the first one UTM WGS84 and the second one
long/lat WGS84
you import your long/lat data into the proper location and then you can
use v.proj or r.proj to reproject them into the UTM WGS84 location

I'm confused.
I want to set up a new project and use UTM wgs 84.
But, some of my data is drg(base USGS topo map), which are lat/long,
and the field data I want to use is x,y( I have UTM coords which I can
georeference to).
So when I set up the project, which coord should I use?
