The rule of thumb that I have always heard and it worked for me is this.
Start with the lowest octane recommended by the manufacturer. Run two
tankfulls through, checking gas mileage and performance(perceived, of
course). Then step up one grade and do the same for each grade up from

We don't have potholes here in the south. What we have (at least here in
Georgia) is sinkholes that occasionally open up when underground streams
washout under the road (parking lot, hotel, stadium, etc.) Those have a
tendency to compress the old suspension if you happen to find one. :^)
